Physiotherapy
Helping Children Move with Confidence and Strength
Physiotherapy is a core service at the Princess Elizabeth Centre and plays a vital role in helping children with physical disabilities improve mobility, strength, balance and overall function. Our physiotherapy program is designed to support children at every stage of their development — from early intervention to post-surgical rehabilitation and long-term mobility support.
Our goal is to help each child achieve the highest possible level of independence while improving comfort, confidence and quality of life.
Individualised Assessment & Treatment Planning
Every child begins their physiotherapy journey with a comprehensive assessment conducted by a qualified physiotherapist. This assessment evaluates muscle strength, joint range of motion, posture, balance, coordination, gait (walking pattern) and functional movement.
Based on these findings, an individualised treatment plan is developed, tailored specifically to the child’s condition, age, abilities and goals. Treatment plans are reviewed and adjusted regularly to ensure steady progress as the child grows and develops.
Therapeutic Interventions
Physiotherapy sessions may include a combination of:
- Therapeutic exercises to improve strength, flexibility and endurance
- Gait training to support safe and efficient walking
- Balance and coordination activities
- Stretching and positioning to reduce muscle tightness and prevent contractures
- Functional movement training for sitting, standing, transfers and daily mobility
- Use of assistive devices and mobility aids where appropriate
Sessions are conducted in a supportive, child-friendly environment that encourages participation and confidence.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy plays a critical role in recovery following orthopaedic surgery. Our physiotherapists work closely with the medical and nursing teams to support safe healing and gradual return to movement.
Post-operative physiotherapy focuses on:
- Restoring mobility and strength
- Preventing stiffness and complications
- Improving functional outcomes
- Supporting safe transitions back to daily activities
Each child’s rehabilitation plan is carefully paced to match their recovery and medical guidance.
Supporting Long-Term Mobility & Independence
For children with long-term or progressive conditions, physiotherapy provides ongoing support to maintain mobility, prevent deterioration and promote independence. Therapy helps children develop strategies to move safely and efficiently, reducing discomfort and fatigue.
Where needed, physiotherapists also advise on:
- Proper positioning
- Use of braces, splints or mobility aids
- Home exercise programmes
- Environmental adaptations to support independence
Family Involvement & Education
Families are an essential part of the physiotherapy process. Our team works closely with parents and caregivers to ensure therapy goals continue beyond the Centre.
Parents receive guidance on:
- Home exercises and positioning techniques
- Safe handling and mobility assistance
- Supporting the child’s progress in everyday activities
This collaborative approach helps reinforce progress and build confidence at home.
A Holistic, Child-Centred Approach
Physiotherapy at the Princess Elizabeth Centre is not just about movement — it is about empowering children to participate more fully in school, play, family life and the community. Through consistent therapy, encouragement and expert care, we help children move forward with greater confidence and independence.
